Bright Books does the bookkeeping for sole traders and micro-businesses — the people for whom the books are a Sunday evening problem rather than a department. We look after around sixty clients: tradespeople, consultants, a couple of shops, several one-person limited companies. If you are still running the business out of one bank account and a carrier bag of receipts, you are exactly who we are set up for.

We work monthly rather than in an annual panic. £90 a month covers reconciling your receipts and invoices, chasing you for the three things that are missing, and sending a short summary of where you actually stand — money in, money out, and what to put aside for tax. The summary is one page and written in English. Payroll is £6 per payslip, filed with HMRC on time, and works from a single employee upwards, including directors paying themselves.

Year-End Accounts at £450 covers your annual accounts and either your Self Assessment or your company return, prepared and filed. That price assumes we have been doing the monthly bookkeeping; if you arrive in January with a carrier bag and a deadline we will still help, but we will quote you honestly for the tidying-up first. We would rather give you an uncomfortable number up front than a surprise one later.

We are qualified bookkeepers, not accountants, and there is a line we do not cross: complex tax planning, company restructuring and anything contentious with HMRC goes to an accountant, and we will introduce you to one rather than have a go.
